As he marks the tenth anniversary of the Kargil War and launches India’s first indigenously built nuclear-powered submarine Arihant on Sunday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has an opportunity to rise above the din of Delhi’s latest political controversy.

The PM and the government have no reason at all to be defensive on either the Sharm el-Sheikh joint statement with Pakistan or the agreement on end-use of American defence equipment.

While the BJP and the CPM will stage a theatre of the absurd in the Lok Sabha next week, the PM must continue to address the three main strategic challenges the Kargil war forced the nation to confront.

First, the Pakistan Army, equipped with nuclear weapons, has the freedom to mount unconventional attacks on India without the fear of punitive military retaliation.

Second, India needs a working partnership with the United States that is among the very few restraining factors on the Pakistan Army. Three, until it can find a genuine reconciliation with Pakistan, India will not be able to realize its global aspirations.

Dr. Singh’s predecessor, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had the will to reverse Pakistan's Kargil aggression, understood the implications of all three lessons. Despite vicious political attacks, including from his own party, Vajpayee persisted with his attempts to find peace with Pakistan, build bridges with the United States, and expand India’s room for nuclear manoeuvre.

That the BJP has abandoned Vajpayee’s legacy is clear from the party’s opportunistic opposition to the civil nuclear initiative and its latest intemperate attacks on India’s engagement with the US and Pakistan.

    ... contd.

Defending Raja MohanBy: R. Ramanathan | 31-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Editor:Some of the personal attacks on PM Singh and Mr. Raja Mohan are beyond the pale. The entire world recognizes the nuclear sub Arihant as a major step towards India's credible second-strike response in the event of nuclear attack as we have a policy of "no first strike". A nuclear Land-Sea-Air Triad will secure India against nuclear intimidation from our Asian rivals. Yet I find nothing but hand-wringing! Our PM has made far-reaching decisions so far. Mr. Mohan correctly stated that Mr. Vajpayee took gutsy decisions to brave global sanctions and conduct the nuclear tests in 1998-and he was pilloried by the BJP. Congress was also upset that Nehru's nuclear program was usurped by the BJP. Shame on Congress for those statements-but shame on the BJP for not supporting PM Singh on the nuclear deal that they had championed when in power. The time has come for both parties to collaborate in national interest! Foreign policy demands national unity-look past personal interests!
The ChUSPak implications on indiaBy: KVSKumar | 27-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward The author has stated only part of the fact when he stated that "The PM and the govt have no reason at all to be defensive on either the Sharm el-Sheikh joint statement with Pak or the agreement on end-use of US defence equipment"; what he failed mention is the agreement on "limited liability" to nuclear plant operators. More and more such concessions to US MNCs are yet to come out of UPA's hat. And in future, God forbid, we will see more incidents manifold worse than Bhopal. As for "working partnership with the US" it would be nice if the author educates the readers about the nations that have become world powers with help from US, throughout its history of more than 5 centuries. The fact is that working partnership is not Indias need but that of the US, since Pakistan has become unstable and unreliable. They need a foot-hold on Asia to poke the other two powers to be reckoned with (viz. China and Russia) and at the same intimidate, interfere and stymie our growth.

PM shame to nationBy: Suchithra | 27-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward This article is completely biased.Nuclear deal was righlty opposed by BJP.Building a nuclear submarine doesnt prove any contribution of PM.Our strenght first lies in protecting the soverginity of our nation which PM have failed to do
Slightly more present caseBy: Vaibhav | 27-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Given we are probably paying over double the price for an aricraft carrier and the nationalist feeling prevaling amongst us. Can i highlight an issue closer to home?Tomatoes - 24 Rs/kg, potatoes - 14 Rs/kg and onions - 15 Rs/kg. Can i ask Sandeep to fast one meal a week and the others to follow suit to bring these staple food prices down to earth? This is a very real situation where the farmers still get about 2-3 Rs/kg of potatoes. Imagine where the rest of the inflation comes from.
