In rare personal visit, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday visited the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) in Bandra-Kurla Complex to mark its 10th anniversary and inaugurated the new sixth floor of the hospital.

Singh, who is on a two-day visit to Mumbai, visited the institute on Saturday afternoon. The PM and his wife Gursharan Kaur also inaugurated an orthopaedic, cosmetic and the state-of-the-art robotic and minimally invasive surgery operation theatre and spent about an hour at AHI.

By visiting the hospital Singh fulfilled an old promise he had made to Dr Ramakant Panda, stated a press statement released by the hospital. Dr Panda had done a complex redo bypass on Singh in January 2009.

Others present at the event were Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Health Minister Suresh Shetty, Rajiv Shukla, Dinesh Trivedi and Nita Ambani.

Dr Panda later told reporters that Singh saw facilities at the hospital and expressed happiness over the services provided by it. Expressing concern over the rising incidence of heart diseases among Indians, Panda said "by 2025, 60 million Indians will be suffering from heart and cardiovascular diseases. Every third person dies of heart ailments".
