PMC acts tough on citizens for non-segregation of garbage

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is acting tough on citizens not segregating dry and wet garbage at source.

A circular has been issued by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Suresh Jagtap, who said cases have been already filed against 200 persons for non-segregation of garbage at source. He said fines would be imposed on defaulters.

The drive is set to intensified this month.

"We will register cases against errant persons,'' Jagtap said.

PMC has admitted its failed to achieve 100 per cent segregation of dry and wet garbage at source and said only 35 per cent of the garbage collected in the city is now segregated at source.

PMC is taking the cue from a recent Karnataka HC directive on handling and management of garbage that said waste should be segregated at source. The Karnataka HC had directed that all municipal waste in Bangalore be segregated at the household level and transported to composting and recycling units without mixing the segregated garbage.

PMC's efforts in this direction are incomplete, said officials.

The efforts to segregate garbage at source has been facing hurdles from elected representatives.

The PMC administration had planned to give the door-to-door garbage collection contract to NGO SWaCH.

But the PMC general body meet had last year rejected a proposal to set aside Rs 4.32 crore to assist door-to-door collection of garbage by SWaCH and had asked the civic administration to work on a model to incorporate other organisations in garbage collection so that ragpickers could benefit from the initiative.
