PMC expresses inability to take up demolition drive in merged villages

Even as the district administration has washed its hands of carrying out demolition drive in the rural areas after it was decided to merge 28 villages with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the civic body on its part has expressed inability to take up the responsibility and feel the district administration should continue with the job.

PMC Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said that with the merger yet to happen, the district administration can take up the responsibility.

"If they have listed out the buildings they can go ahead with the action as the process of merger will take time as suggestions and objections are yet to be invited,''said Pathak.

On the other hand, district administration officials have said that since the merger is going to happen, it would be better if the PMC takes up the work as they are yet to get the requisite man and machinery required to initiate action.

The merger of 28 villages will bring almost all villages in Haveli taluka listed by the district administration for illegal constructions within the civic limits. Senior officials from the district administration said barring some parts of Wagholi, all the villages listed for illegal constructions are being merged within the PMC limits.

The administration had listed nearly 1,339 illegal structures in 13 talukas of the district. For Pune city in Haveli taluka, the surrounding areas included areas Undri, Ambegaon, Katraj, Wagholi, Manjari, Jambhulwadi and Phursungi which are all in the merger map. "We have only some parts of Wagholi to reassess,'' said the official.

Senior officials added that PMC would be able to get the work done faster having the machinery and manpower unlike the collectorate which was awaiting a separate wing and machinery sanctioned by the government.
