  • The other area of concern is the huge loses Air India has made on some of the important routes. Consider this:

The airline withdrew its Mumbai-Hong Kong flight last August after estimating annual losses of Rs 235 crore on the route.

It rerouted its Delhi-New York flight to start from Kolkata after it estimated annual loss to the tune of Rs 236 crore.

Delhi-London-New York flight was making Rs 224 crore loss, so New York was dropped last September to make this a Delhi-London flight in the hope that Rs 155 crore will be saved. Instead, a Delhi-Kathmandu flight was launched in February to make some gains.

The airline withdrew Mumbai-London-Chicago service after an estimated Rs 128-crore loss, re-routed via Frankfurt now.

Delhi-Frankfurt-Los Angeles flight was withdrawn last September after an estimated Rs 114-crore loss.

On the domestic front, the airline is making losses of about Rs 20 crore annually on the Mumbai-Kochi-Trivandrum route and about Rs 18.5 crore on the Mumbai-Raipur-Bhubaneswar flight. It withdrew flights on the Chennai-Mumbai and Chennai-Kolkata routes last year.

PMO's green light to return leased planes.....By: M Krishnamachary | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Reading Mr. Pranab D Samantha's report on the AI working, I understand that leasing aircraft is a complicated affair. And loss making was never thought of a possiblity at that time. About maintaining staff at stations no longer operational is dictated by matters not strictly of profit and loss. Air India is one of the Navratna companies. Therefore, Efforts must be made to re-open those stations as useful destinations. As our country's flag bearer airline, Air India, operational matters can not be limited to strict economy. We have to keep our national pride intact. Air India had seen glorious past and it is an honoured entity. But, ultimately, people would like to see that all PSUs are run profitably and efficiently.
Air India scamBy: k.madhukar | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward What now comes out of cupboards are nothing but scandalous and should be treated as a sscam. The airline, with the connivance of the ministry, has been looting the exchequer. Imagine 1000 workers running canteens, three hundred union leaders exempted from work( god knows how many of these workers are ghost workers), staff posted abroad twiddling thier thumbs and paid in foriegn exchange, yet our joker of aviation minister had gall to say staffstrenth won't be trimed. This absolutley insane to say the least.
Turning around Air IndiaBy: G.Hebbar | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward It is an eyewash to indicate that the government (PMO) is surprised to learn of over staffing in AI. Nothing is done at AI management without clearance of cicil aviation ministry and therefore the Minister must be knowing this and is responsible. The ministry has appointed Accenture to advise on the process of merger and number of posts such as Executive Directors is as per the plan of this consultancy, so it cannot be now termed as a "surprise"The government should have begun the downsizing process last year but held back so as not to appear anti-labour before the elections and it is now reaping the fruit of this delayed decision in the financial position of AI.
