PMO sets up Rs 20K crore project for reaching broadband to 2.5 lakh villages

PMO has set up a Rs 20,000 crore project to reach broadband connectivity to an estimated 2,50,000 villages.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)has set up a Rs 20,000 crore project to reach broadband connectivity to an estimated 2,50,000 villages.

The aim of the project is to accelerate the delivery of government services in the villages. The proposal to establish the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) to provide broadband connectivity to these gram panchayats was recently reviewed by the PMO,and acting on that initiative has launched this e-governance project.

To deal with the various aspects of the project in a structured manner,a Coordination Committee will be set up.

The NOFN is being created as part of the government’s effort to provide e-governance at panchayat level and will facilitate electronic delivery of services.

The coordination committee which includes secretaries of information technology,health and family welfare,school education and literacy,higher edcuation,food and public distribution,panchayati raj and rural development committee will be headed by the telecom secretary.

This committee will assess the requirement of various ministries and government departments to have a pan-India network to offer governance service to citizens using broadband up to panchayat level.
