PMPML bus stop shed crashes, one injured

Major tragedy averted as barely three minutes before the collapse most of the passengers had boarded 2 buses

Barely three minutes after two buses left the bus stop near PMC octroi building on Tuesday morning with around 50 passengers from the stop, the PMPML bus shed came crashing down. With most commuters having boarded the two buses in nick of time, only one commuter was injured.

Bhushan Sonawane, a Class XII student of Fergusson College, was injured after the metal bus shed collapsed on him.

PMPML officials said the bus stop was erected by a private party on BOT basis. The contract had expired a year ago, but the PMPML had not floated fresh tenders to award the bus stop contract. "The tender process is under way," said PMPML spokesperson Deepak Pardeshi.

Many commuters were waiting at the bus stop but they boarded the two buses just two-three minutes before the shed caved in, said Sonawane. "After taking my college exam, I came to the stop to take a bus to Warje Malwadi, where I stay in a hostel. I was waiting for a bus along with two others when the shed collapsed. The two others moved away just in time as they saw the shed falling. I realised it a bit late so a part of the shed fell on me," Sonawane told Newsline.

"PMPML staff and people at the spot helped me. PMPML staffer Sanjay Shinde took me to a hospital on Tilak Road. X-ray reports confirmed no fracture. But my entire back and hands are swollen and hurting badly," said Sonawane.

Shinde said, "Bhushan had a narrow escape as he did not receive major injuries. I immediately took him to Yogesh Hospital where the doctors said he is stable."

A senior PMPML official at the bus stop said, "The buses left with 40-50 commuters from the stop at 10.20 am. The buses had just gone a little ahead when the shed collapsed at the same very spot where commuters were standing minutes ago."
