"It has always been experienced that commuter count goes down after a fare hike. It's also a psychological response by commuters who might prefer to try other modes of transport post a steep hike in bus fares. A detailed study may also show that the number of commuters on shorter routes will see a steeper fall than that of longer ones as short route passengers are most affected by the fare hike," said Inamadar.
