Pneumonia Congress Held

At India's first Pneumonia Congress organised by the IAP, pediatricians across the country emphasised on simple preventive measures to build a child's immunity such as breastfeeding infants for at least the first six months, nutritional diet, hygienic surroundings and timely immunization to keep the disease under control. It was also pointed out that many parents forget the dates of impending doses for vaccination. To solve this problem IAP has introduced a service of vaccination reminder via SMS this year by which parents attending the registered pediatricians will receive an alert on the vaccination dates. "Most assume that vaccination to prevent serious health conditions is only for children not realising that it is an important preventive tool to reduce fatalities in the case of elderly too. A single shot of preventive vaccination is a cost-effective investment for healthy ageing offering them protection from Pneumococcal Pneumonia," say Dr Dhananjay Kashikar, President, Indian Academy of Pediatrics – Pune and Dr. O.P Sharma, Secretary, Geriatric Society of India.
