A poacher who allegedly faked his death more than a decade ago has finally been nabbed

A poacher who allegedly faked his death more than a decade ago has finally been nabbed.

Kailash Baheliya, who assumed a different name and sold herbal remedies in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, will now be tried for killing a tigress and also under relevant IPC sections.

A CJM court in Umaria has issued a production warrant against Kailash, who is currently in a sub-jail in the same town in Madhya Pradesh after recently being booked under the Arms Act. The Chhattisgarh Police took him into custody in September for a minor offence. He was all but released before the police became suspicious and checked with their MP counterparts. It then surfaced that Kailash along with three other poachers allegedly killed a tigress, believed to be the famous Sita, who till she disappeared in 1996 was most photographed tigress in the world.

The Manpur Police arrested Kailash and three others in 1999. The trial began at the CJM court in Umaria. Later, when informed of Kailashs death, the court removed his name while the three accomplices were sent to jail for three years. The sessions court upheld the conviction and now their challenge is pending in the high court.
