While the BJP continues to target the Congress over the questionable exit of Warren Anderson after the 1984 Bhopal tragedy, the RSS is spinning a new theory. It says that the then governments both Centre and state tried to hide the fact that the gas leaked from the UCIL factory had deadly cyanide in it.
The lead editorial in the latest issue of RSS mouthpiece Organiser recalls the arrival of a German toxicologist (who it identified as Max Daunderer) a day after the tragedy with the only known antidote to cyanide then, sodium thiosulphate. He successfully administered the drug to a few people. This proved the presence of cyanide in the leaked gas. It goes on to claim that Daunderer was informed that he was wanted in Delhi by the Central Public Health Department on December 7. When he arrived in Delhi,he was asked to leave India immediately, failing which he was to be arrested. He left the country but made arrangements for 20,000 doses of the medicine prescribed by him. It did not reach the victims, it says.
The ICMR which in its early report had mentioned cyanide poisoning later corrected its report. None of these would have happened without pressure from very highly placed persons, beyond Bhopal and possibly beyond Delhi. For 26 years, the governments, both the Congress and non-Congress,that came to power in Bhopal and Delhi never tried to track these sources that pulled strings from behind, with utter lack of conscience, it says.
The celibacy myth
The Organiser carries a full-page article titled Church, celibacy and child exploitation based on reports of sexual abuse and molestation of young boys and girls within the Catholic church. It says the exposing of such scandals have raised serious question marks over the practice of compulsory celibacy in the Catholic church.
It says the church argues that celibacy provides more time to the priests and bishops to devote themselves to the service of God. They have no family to bother with, and can concentrate more on the divine than on the mundane. However, the exposition of mass scale sexual abuse and molestation cases within the Catholic church has shattered this myth of celibacy. On many occasions, this compulsory practice of abstinence is supposed to be the root cause of this malice in the church, it says. But so far,Pope Benedict XVI and his predecessor Pope John Paul II have given more stress on celibacy. It is puzzling to find out that the church, which is supposed to protect, guide and turn people into better citizens is the very one committing such atrocities. Does the church have a moral and spiritual right to reprimand the sinners? the Organiser seeks to know.
Friends and foes
The edition also carries an interview with senior BJP leader from Kerala O. Rajagopal who talks about the CPMs misrule in the state, its attempts to woo Hindus to make up for erosion of its Christian and Muslim votebase and most interestingly,CPM-BJP ties.
About CPM-BJP ties at the national level,Rajagopal says both the parties are naturally forced to fight the UPAs corruption and misdeeds. He says that because of the efforts of the leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj, there is more opposition and floor co-ordination in Parliament.
Sushma regularly meets CPM/CPI leaders in Parliament for better floor co-ordination, he says and dubs the passage of the womens reservation bill in Rajya Sabha a feather in the caps of Swaraj and Brinda Karat. CPM has worked in tandem with Jan Sangh during Emergency. In the interest of the nation, BJP will work with anybody, since it is a Nation First and Party Second movement, he said. He also accuses the Congress of spreading false news of CPM-BJP tie-up to create fears among minorities and usurp the entire Christian-Muslim vote.
