Police bust gang involved in smuggling drugs, 6 held

The Anti-Narcotics Cell and Anti-Alcohol Smuggling Staff of the Ludhiana police has been successful in busting an inter-state gang involved in smuggling poppy husk and opium. The police have arrested six gang members and recovered 51 bags of poppy husk, 6 kgs of opium worth Rs 31 lakh and two vehicles.

Those arrested have been identified as Naresh Kumar, a resident of Una district in Himachal Pradesh, Kewkat Rabari, Gautam Lal, Mohan Lal, Kishan Kumar and Uday Kumar, all hailing from Rajasthan.

"Late Saturday night, Harbans Singh, the head of the Anti-Narcotics Cell, along with the police party had set up a naka on the R K Road near Hotel Zoom where they saw this Alto car approaching them," said ADCP Nilambri Vijay Jagdale.

The police said when the men on duty tried to stop the car, the driver made an attempt to speed away. After a short chase, the car was stopped and its two occupants were later identified as Naresh and Kewkat. "While the police were in the process of talking to these men, they saw a truck coming. The truck driver was asked to stop, but he too tried to flee after breaking down the barricades. The truck driver was overpowered and the other four members of the gang were arrested. The contraband was also found in this truck which was carrying powder meant to making paint. The role of the company from where this powder had come is also being checked," added the ADCP.

During the preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that the accused had been involved in smuggling of drugs for quiet some time. They used to purchase drugs at a lower cost from Rajasthan and sell them at a higher price in Punjab.
