Police fingerprint migrants in an attempt to secure Noida

The Noida police have decided to register fingerprints of all tenants, domestic helps, vendors and scrap dealers across the city.

The Noida police have decided to register fingerprints of all tenants, domestic helps, vendors and scrap dealers across the city. By doing this, they aim to create a database of over three lakh members of its floating population.

The operation is being carried out with the help of an NGO.

“There have been cases of looting and dacoity, where domestic helps and security guards could not be traced due to forged papers and false contact numbers submitted to their employers. There are many vendors, scrap dealers and domestic helps who go missing after committing crimes. In such cases, the only way to find out if they are history sheeters is by getting their fingerprints and matching them with the ones in our database. This would also help us find out the number of migrant and non-permanent members we have in the city,” said SP (City) Anant Dev.

Police claim Noida has around 3 lakh migrants from various parts of the country, and some have even come from Bangladesh and Nepal. Stating that only a fingerprint database can bring down crime in the city,Dev said,“Also, the fact that their fingerprints are recorded may deter many of them from committing crimes.”

To make the verification process easy, police have decentralised the process. Each police station now has a constable to verify non-registered residents of the area. “Earlier, when it was being done at Sector-6,many employers would skip the process to avoid travelling. But now,the verification forms would be forwarded to the main office from the local police station itself,” said Dev.
