A police informer was beaten up by five persons, who suspected him of tipping-off the police about their illegal liquor trade, on Monday.
Surinder Kumar was walking outside a tavern on Monday morning when the accused beat him up, fracturing his leg.
On the intervening night of October 25 and 26, the police had impounded a vehicle with 15 cartons of whisky from Sector 47.
Surinder, however, denied having played any role in the case, though “I’ve been trailing some people for their role in illegal liquor trade”.
“I was trailing some people, but I did not give tip-off about the truck which was impounded that night,” he said.
SSP S S Srivastva confirmed that Surinder did not have anything to do with the case.
Surinder does not know what he was beaten up for. “I don’t know if I was beaten up for the tip-off or because I was trailing them. But they had come to know that I was an informer,” he said. “They kept beating me till I lost consciousness. And they kept saying ‘aaja tujhe mukhbir hone ka mazaa chakhaate hain’ (today we’ll teach you a lesson for being an informer).”
Surinder (44) is admitted to a hospital with a fracture in his right leg. He is a small-time vendor but has been a police informer for long. He has reportedly helped the police in several cases.
Police officers, who known Surinder as a trusted informer, said they were surprised how the information that he was an informer leaked.
