The Delhi Police have prepared a list of 67 classified documents, marked ‘‘secret’’, which they allege were passed on to US diplomat Rosamna Minchew by Mukesh Saini and S.S. Paul, who were arrested on the charge of spying. Besides these documents, an Internet Protocol (IP) address (see box) installed at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) was also allegedly leaked to her. The police have also recovered two classified documents used by Military Intelligence from the hard disks of Ujjawal Dasgupta’s personal computer, from his house. According to top sources, the IP address was accessed by some unidentified persons in the US.
The police were now trying to establish the link.
The IP address allegedly given to Minchew is installed at NSCS, where Paul was working as senior systems analyst. He is among the three persons arrested by the Delhi Police in the latest spy scandal exposed by The Indian Express.
A Delhi court today remanded Dasgupta in judicial custody for 14 days. During his police remand, he was confronted with the evidence and the classified information recovered through pen drives belonging to him found inside a well in Chanakyapuri.
Mukesh Saini, who was arrested on July 1, revealed during his police remand that he, along with Minchew and Paul, had visited Mumbai and Kolkata in September 2005. The trio had simultaneously, but separately, gone to Mumbai, sources said adding that Saini had helped the US diplomat by directing Paul to furnish information related to NSCS.
Paul’s disclosure report revealed that he had received $16,000 (approx Rs 8 lakh) along with a mobile phone. The police also said that Dasgupta had spoken to Minchew on several occasions and there were SMSes, which the police would be using as evidence against Dasgupta.
