Urging the government to completely revamp and modernise the state police force, the policemen have also demanded revolvers and sophisticated electronic gadgets like walky-talky sets and mobile phones. At present, these facilities are made available only up to the Deputy Suprintendent of Police (Dy SP) and IPS officers.
Haroon Kadiwala, the chairman of the co-ordination committee of the two proposed police associations, said there are about 55,000 constables and head constables/ASIs in Gujarat, which is an inadequate strength to maintain law and order in this sensitive border state.
The government should launch a drive to recruit more people in the police force, Chavda said.
