Police officer suspended for assaulting lawyer

A Delhi Police Sub-Inspector has been suspended for allegedly assaulting a lawyer on Sunday after the latter tried to get an FIR filed on an illegal demolition,the Delhi High Court was informed on Wednesday.

Even as a bench headed by Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri took up the petition,filed by a lawyer who alleged assault on a member of his fraternity,the Delhi Police Standing Counsel told the court that Sub-Inspector O P Yadav has been suspended. Police are planning to probe the matter after lodging the FIR,he said.

As per the petition,advocate Shreeji Bhavsar of the Human Rights Law Network and five others had gone to the Sarita Vihar police station on October 16 to lodge an FIR against an alleged illegal demolition in Sapera Basti. The area is predominantly inhabited by Dalits.

However,the SI started arguing with Bhavsar and allegedly assaulted him. Shreeji reportedly suffered a fracture in one hand and wounds in the other.

The bench ordered the Crime Branch to conduct an investigation into the matter,and submit a report within a week. The court also asked the JCP to monitor the probe.

The bench has fixed November 2 as the next date for hearing the matter.
