PM to inaugurate Science Congress
Even as the nation protests against the gruesome gangrape in New Delhi, women and gender discrimination will be the focal point of the Women Science Congress, a session at the 100th Indian Science Congress that will be held in Kolkata from January 3 to 7. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the event and President Pranab Mukherjee will be present at the inaugural function.
Seven Nobel laureates — R K Pachauri who won the Nobel Prize for Environmental Science in 2007, Samuel C C Ting who won the Nobel Prize in Physics, Dr James Mirrlees who won the Nobel Prize in 1996 in Economics, Dr S R Vardhan who won the Nobel Prize in Mathematics in 2007, Dr Yuan T Lee, Dr El-ichi Negishi and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan who received the Nobel in chemistry in 1986, 2010 and 2009, respectively, will also attend.
While the inaugural programme will be at Salt Lake Stadium, the five day-long sessions will be held Satyendranath Bose National Center for Basic Science, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Institute, Calcutta University campus at Salt Lake, All India Institute of Public Health campus at Salt Lake, Jadavpur University campus at Salt Lake and Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre at Salt Lake.
