The police in Chennai have started a probe into the activities of 56-year-old Dutchman Wilhelmus Weijdeveld, who has been on the Interpol radar for alleged child pornography, to find out if he abused children in Chennai where he was staying for the past few years.

Wilhelmus was arrested from Chennai on November 7 by the cyber crime wing of the city police, after being alerted by the Interpol that he was uploading child pornography from the city. According to the cyber crime wing, the Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre, an organisation in Germany, tipped off the Interpol about Wilhelmus's activities.

Wilhelmus has been charged under Section 67-B of the IT Act of 2008, dealing with child pornography, the first such case registered in the country since the Act came into force a few weeks ago. As fresh charges have been made against him, the police have decided to probe his activities since coming out on bail seven years ago, Police Commissioner T Rajendiran said.
