Police say bid to get Jaitley's call records a 'higher level conspiracy'

Three days after a Delhi Police constable was arrested for allegedly attempting to access mobile phone call detail records of BJP leader Arun Jaitley, a private detective was arrested in connection with the case. Police said they were on the lookout for two others.

The private detective, identified as Neeraj of Ghaziabad, met constable Arvind Dabas two years ago, police said, adding that they both lived in GTB Enclave.

The Special Cell, which produced Dabas in a Tis Hazari court on Monday, sought extension of his custody for five days, saying their probe suggested a "higher level conspiracy" that could pose a threat to national security.

The investigating officer claimed they needed to find out why Dabas was trying to access call detail records of important politicians.

"We are requesting for extension of police custody of the accused to establish the motive behind accessing the CDR and how the accessed information was used. The accused has not been cooperating with police and further detailed interrogation in the case is required," the investigating officer said in the court of metropolitan magistrate Aparna Swamy.

Police said they need to ascertain if Dabas hacked into official email accounts of other politicians and the NIC website to get passwords, and about his attempts to access call detail records.

Naushad Ahmed Khan, lawyer for Dabas, argued that his client was being falsely implicated and the police were intentionally making it a high profile case. He said he had still not been provided a copy of the FIR because of which he had been unable to apply for bail.

The court granted police custody of Dabas for two more days. The next hearing is on February 20.

According to police, Dabas knew Neeraj who ran Detective Agency India in Ghaziabad. Neeraj claimed his clients were people who wanted to check on the background of potential grooms and brides. But police claimed their investigation found that Neeraj bribed Dabas to use the email address of an ACP to try and access call detail records of different persons.
