The Delhi Police on Thursday claimed they had arrested two persons who were part of the group of five that abducted a call centre employee from South Delhi last week and took turns to rape her in their pick-up truck.
The gang members, all aged around 25,are habitual criminals, the police said, adding that two of them were out on bail after being arrested earlier on rape charges. The gang members, based in Haryana, would often visit Delhi late at night to commit burglaries or steal cattle, the police said. They were trying to commit similar crimes on the night they raped the call centre employee.
The five did not set out with the intention of committing the crime. They only seized the opportunity after seeing the two women in a desolate area, said Police Commissioner B K Gupta.
One of the three other accused surrendered at a Faridabad court a few days back in connection with an earlier case of cattle theft, fearing arrest in the rape case, the police said. The other two have been identified, but are still at large. We hope to catch them soon, said DCP (South) H G S Dhaliwal.
The 30-year-old victim from Mizoram was abducted as she was walking to her home in Mochi village after being dropped off by her call centre cab at 1.30 am on November 24. The accused drove her to Mongolpuri at gunpoint and raped her before dumping her on the roadside nearly 40 minutes later.
The accused were travelling on the Ring Road where they noticed the call centre cab with the two women in the car,the police said. They trailed it for a while before intercepting the women who had been dropped off by then.
Three of the accused tried to pull both the women into the pick-up truck, but one of them managed to escape. The victim was then made to sit in the front seat at gunpoint and driven to Mongolpuri, where the accused parked the vehicle and raped her in the back of the vehicle, a police officer said. The accused then gave the girl Rs 150 and asked her to take a cab to go home, after which they drove back to Mewat, the police said.
The police scanned thousands of phone records, checked hundreds of commercial vehicles passing through Delhi and went through records of those involved in similar crimes to solve the case, said Gupta.
On Wednesday,we received information that the accused are hiding in Dhauj and Taini areas of Mewat. A team of 300 personnel raided the area and arrested Usman and Shamshad accused. They also recovered the mini-truck, Gupta said.

When they committed the crime, two of the five suspects were out on bail after being arrested earlier on rape charges. Profiles of the accused:
