Police to send team to Greece to probe ATM hack attack

A day after it emerged that nearly Rs 15 lakh had been siphoned from Axis Bank accounts,police have begun monitoring visitors to and from Greece,as the hackers were reportedly based there

A day after it emerged that nearly Rs 15 lakh had been siphoned from Axis Bank accounts,police have begun monitoring visitors to and from Greece,as the hackers were reportedly based there. Police will also send a team to Greece to make inquiries at banks where the money was deposited.

The money was withdrawn by hackers from 37 bank accounts,including those of 10 policemen.

According to police,the accused installed a skimming device into the card slot of an Axis Bank ATM outside the DGP office in Colaba. The device has been removed,police said.

Police are examining the CCTV footage from the ATM. “An entire month’s footage is being scanned by experts. We are checking nearby hotels for any Greek citizens and going through records of Indians who travelled to Greece,” said Krishna Prakash,Additional Commissioner,South region.

“We have the account numbers where the deposits were made and are zeroing in on the account holders. We are also checking if ATMs of other banks have been targeted,” Prakash said.

Axis Bank,which holds salary accounts of the Mumbai Police,already refunded the money to the 37 account holders.

“The bank has formed a team to look into the matter and is co-operating with police,” said a spokesperson for Axis Bank.
