Welcoming the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) verdict quashing the Gujarat governments action that downgraded four annual confidential reports (ACRs) of senior IPS officer Kuldeep Sharma, the Gujarat State Police Head Constables and Constables Union (GSPHCC) has said it wants to see this additional director general of police elevated as director general of police, the highest police post in the state.
The union, which has not been recognised by the state government so far despite a green signal from the Gujarat High Court, said the CAT order had boosted the morale of the police in Gujarat, where it has been constantly at the receiving end due to political interference.
Law and order has not been effectively maintained in the state because of constant interference from the political class. In such a situation,we need a leader who can take the pressure and fearlessly stand with the public at large, said Naresh Bramhbhatt, president of the union who is posted as a head constable in Kutch. Though it is the state governments prerogative to choose the top police officer, the union feels Sharma fits the bill, he said.
The union, which has again moved the HC against the state government for denying it recognition, has over 10,000 members. The verdict has spread cheers among honest and sincere policemen, Bramhbhatt said.
After Sharmas ACR was downgraded in 2009,he was posted as managing director of Gujarat Sheep and Wool Development Corporation Limited, though,on seniority basis,he was the frontrunner for the post of DGP.
