While the nation celebrated Holi over the weekend,poll-bound West Bengal observed the festival of colours amid frenetic political activity. Politicians played Holi in their constituencies on Saturday and Sunday to woo voters.
For many Trinamool Congress candidates,the festival marked the beginning of their election campaigns after the list of names was announced on Friday.
Subrata Mukherjee,Trinamool candidate from Ballygunge constituency,was smeared with green colour by voters. These celebrations are also part of my campaign. Today (Saturday) I played Holi with the voters, Mukherjee said.
Shatarup Ghosh (25) of the CPM,the youngest Left Front candidate,joined his voters in Kasba constituency for the celebrations. Red gulal smeared on his face,he went from door to door touching the feet of elders.
Sovandeb Chattopadhyay,another Trinamool leader and candidate from Rashbehari,was smeared with green colour by voters in the area.
Sujit Bose,Trinamool candidate from Bidhannagar,played and danced with supporters at Sribhuni. Ever year I play Holi. You can say that there is a big responsibility of campaigning associated with it this time, Bose said.
Holi also marked the beginning of campaigning for some heavyweights. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee,the candidate from Behala East,kicked off his campaign today by offering prayers at a temple in Karunamoyee.
