Hate attacks and incidents of regional chauvinism can be tackled if there is a political will, the Supreme Court said on Tuesday while agreeing to hear on Monday a PIL linked to the alleged violence perpetrated by Raj Thackeray's MNS party in Maharashtra.

More than a court matter it is a political issue which needs political will to tackle it, the court observed when the petitioner pointed to Mumbai violence and its repercussions in Bihar and Delhi.

"Can it be done through an order of this court. It is a political question not a court issue. If there is a political will it can be tackled," a Bench of Justices B N Aggrawal and G S Singhvi observed.

The Bench was initially not inclined to entertain the petition filed by a businessman Salek Chand Jain, and said that it was for the Union Government to invoke Article 355 for giving appropriate direction to the States concerned.

However, later it observed that the ‘issue was serious’ and agreed to hear the matter; but directed the counsel Sugriv Dubey to suitably amend the petition so that it can be taken up for hearing.

Dubey who mentioned the matter before the Bench complained that the attacks on North Indian by the MNS has led to a chain reaction elsewhere in the country and it threatened to destroy the unity and integrity of the country.

According to the petitioner following the MNS attacks, the Jharkhand Chief Minister had announced that he would not permit the rich mineral resources of the state to be transported to any part of the country.

Act wisely before it's too late... Raj is not the first and will not be the lastBy: Jay | 05-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward State governments are elected by local people not by people in distant states. It’s the duty of any state politician to protect the interest of local people, not for those from other states. It’s the duty of the central govt to strike the balance among all different states. Gross mis-governance by successive central Govts (mainly by Congress) practically ruined the fate of India as a democracy. And that’s why we now see era of coalition politics and rise of local political parties. Maharashtra is not the first and not the last one either to voice opposition against massive migration of unskilled and semi-skilled people from different state and different culture. It’ll be better to make a unbiased law to protect diversity of India, before it’s too late.
Maharashtra is not the first and surely not the last eitherBy: Jay | 05-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Be assured that Maharashtra is not the first and surely will not be the last local uprising against uncontrolled migration for Bihar-UP. There is sign that Punjab may be the next stage. Uncontrolled migration in many states like Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal has changed the demography, economy, living standard for local people. Working condition, wage structure and law and order has deteriorated due to such uncontrolled migration of unskilled and semi-skilled people. India needs to enact laws to protect local culture and implement a true federal democracy where states have more power. The best way forward for a culturally diverse country like India is to acknowledge its diversity and protect that. I hate to speak Hindi or English in many hotels, restaurants, and airport in my own state of Bengal. Business establishments must employ people who can speak local language, at least. If I am not happy with Hindi onslaught, then I will support any political leader who likes to exploit it.
Politics IndeedBy: Rajan Shete | 05-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Why? What's wrong with the good old practice of burning trains and buses and cars etc.. on the streets of Patna etc.. By the way, does Jharkand supply those minerals for free to the 'other States'?
what about burning of buses in maharastra by MNSBy: amit | 05-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward yes, the resources are kind of free if you consider their international price plus fact that you have to pay in foreign currency and transportation cost too , why dont you read about freight equalization policy , govt subsidized all transportation cost of resources otherwise industries would have more in these states than yours. please check the fact that these states get royalty which is 1/1000 of actual price of these resources
