With Love,Sex aur Dhoka,Dibakar Banerjee is ready for brickbats and political trouble
The promos of Love,Sex aur Dhoka dont reveal much. What is the film about?
I am very fascinated by the fact that we are turning into a society where we enjoy sex more as a voyeur and less for the act it is. If you look around, the Internet is bombarded by amateur sex videos that have been shot clandestinely by people who have taken the pain to first film themselves in the act and then upload it. Magazines are full of features on how to improve your sex drive. Newspapers carry huge photographs of actors if they bare their posterior. We almost have a vicarious interest in sex. After all,it is a basic human need, like eating. But is the Internet full of videos of people eating for hours? You enjoy food for its taste. Similarly, sex is enjoyed for the act it is. My film is my attempt to find out why we have turned into a society where we have developed this vicarious interest in sex.
But why the title LSD?
Love, sex and betrayal are three sides of the same coin. Sex comes naturally when you are in love and you also use the act as a means of betrayal. The film explores these two facets through three stories that run parallel but are joined at the hip,as what happens in one affects the other two.
The focus of your films promotions is on the camera.
The film is from the perspective of a voyeur. So we have used the camera accordingly,as a spy-cam,a close-circuit camera,a video cam that may be used to shoot amateur sex videos or even mobile phone cameras to shoot MMS clips. For months on end,our team researched some really weird porn videos to get the camera angles right.
This movie is a drastic move away from your debut Khosla Ka Ghosla,a family entertainer.
It is not a conscious move because these stories were always within me. I had written this film before I made my debut but the project didnt work out then. After Khosla,Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! took precedence. After that I just sat down, tweaked the story and the script and decided to work on the film. Oye Lucky didnt cater to the same audience as Khosla. So the image makeover has been gradual.
Wont the topic of the film compromise on the audience base as families will prefer to stay away?
It will, but the fact is that the film is not for everybody. It has sex videos and a lot of violence in all its brutality. We dont want kids to come and watch it and we are asking for an adult certificate for the film. I am prepared for brickbats and half-expect trouble from political parties because it is not a subtle film. But at the same time, its quite funny in the way Oye Lucky was.
How far has your next,a political thriller, progressed?
I am nearly done with the script. The film has three key characters of which Abhay Deol plays one. You will see him in an unimaginable role as a good Tamil Brahmin boy in trouble. I am still to zero in on the other two actors.
