The Gujarat government late Monday evening promoted 1976-batch IPS officer Chittranjan Singh as a full-time DGP and promoted three other additional DGPs.

The officers are Ahmedabad police commissioner S K Saikia, Deepak Swaroop, who headed the cell handling cases on prevention of atrocities on SC/ST and weaker sections and has now been made the director of state Home Guards, and Amitabh Pathak, who was ADGP (police reforms). Pathak has been appointed as the director of the state's Anti-Corruption Bureau, which was earlier held by Chittranjan Singh, who was also in-charge DGP.

The state government had failed to appoint a full-time DGP for the last two years, apparently to prevent senior-most police officer Kuldip Sharma from becoming the state police chief. Sharma had had several showdowns with the state government when he was heading the CID (crime), after which he was shifted to the obscure post of managing director of Gujarat Sheep and Wool Development Corporation, an office held by an IAS officer till then.

Sharma, who is also from the 1976 batch, is due to retire this December. He had moved the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) accusing Chief Minister Narendra Modi of scaling down his grades in his annual confidential record. At present, he is on deputation at the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Delhi. V K Gupta, the only other officer senior to Singh and one of the contenders for DGP's post, is on deputation to the CBI.
