Polling begins in Meghalaya

A total of 12,77,879 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise,while eleven candidates - seven for Shillong and four for Tura LS seats - are in the fray.

Polling began on a peaceful note for the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Meghalaya on Thursday morning.

A total of 12,77,879 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise,while eleven candidates – seven for Shillong and four for Tura LS seats – are in the fray.

Around 11,000 polling officials have been engaged in the state to carry out the electoral process.

Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee said while the Centre has deputed four companies of paramilitary forces,the state has deployed maximum forces,including 10 reserve paramilitary companies,to ensure law and order. The BSF was maintaining strict surveillance along the international border with Bangladesh.

A total of 356 of the 2,117 polling stations,mostly along the Indo-Bangla and Assam border,have been identified as hyper-sensitive.
