The South African influence on Team India is likely to increase in the coming days, with sources in the BCCI saying that Shaun Pollock and Alan Donald were in the running for the position of the team’s bowling coach. With skipper MS Dhoni too stressing that the team was missing a bowling coach before the team’s departure for the Bangladesh,BCCI is keen to zero in on one of them soon soon.

A BCCI official told The Indian Express that discussions with the team management on the appointment will be taking place very soon. “Top BCCI officials will be traveling to Bangladesh for the launch of the 2011 World Cup and that is the time they will speak to the captain and coach about this. (Gary) Kirsten has given us the names of Pollock and Donald and a final decision on this will be taken after the team returns home,” he said.

BCCI had axed bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad in October last year. Only recently,Dhoni had explained how Kirsten was stretched as he juggled his multiple roles in the team. He went on to speak on how the absence of bowling coach was hurting the Indian team. “Kirsten has to look after everything: he has to sit and talk to the batsmen, bowlers, fielders, build strategies and look after team building. If you have a specialist coach,he is always interacting with the bowlers and trying to get the best out of them. BCCI could reduce the pressure simply by naming replacements who could closely work with the bowlers and fielders,” Dhoni had said.

Dhoni’s statement came after Indian pacers failed to put up decent performances in two ODI series at home against Sri Lanka and Australia after a forgettable outing in the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Meanwhile, reports suggested that Donald had being contacted by board officials during the Champions League but the discussions weren’t conclusive. The 42-year-old was the first South African bowler to take 300 wickets and has coached Warwickshire. Indian paceman Sreesanth recently attributed his return to form,to his stint with Donald during his days with the English county. Pollock had received similar praise during his stint with Mumbai Indians where, during his time as a player in the first season and later as a mentor,he had groomed several young paceman.
