After a High Court directive offered a breather to the residents of Nangloi,Ghevra village on the outskirts of the Capital is next on the list to have its polluting industrial units removed.
Almost two months after the Delhi High Court cracked down on the hundreds of polluting industrial units in Delhi, the government has now assured the court that it will take action against all units in Ghevra that are operating in violation of the court ruling.
Taking strong exception to polluting industrial units mushrooming in the Delhi-Haryana border region,a Division Bench of acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta had directed the authorities to strictly comply with the Supreme Court ruling on the closure of such units in the M C Mehta case of 2004.
The HC directive was to begin with Nangloi and then move on to shut such units in other villages. The authorities were given four weeks.
During a recent hearing, the first status report was submitted by Delhi governments standing counsel Najmi Waziri, who told the court that after inspection of over 200 such units, shutters had been downed on 40 functional units.
Satisfied with the report, the court then asked the counsel to extend their drive to Ghevra village and complete it within four weeks. It asked the government to ensure that all industrial units that have come up in residential areas in that village on or after August 1,1990,are closed. They should also take further action in Nangloi, the Bench directed.
There has been complete compliance with the court order. The team comprised the area SDM,officials of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee,Industry department,BSES Rajdhani and the Delhi Jal Board. Intensive inspections were done and several units were closed. The task is on and will be complete soon, a senior government official told Newsline.
The order came on a PIL filed by Mahavir Singh, who alleged that hundreds of illegal units are operating in villages like Nangloi,Ghevra,Neelwal,Mundka,Kamrruddin Nagar,Tikri Kalan and Ranhaula.
