Pond at Hazira full of dead fish

Officials from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and environmental activists visited Kawas village at Hazira in Surat district on Monday.

Officials from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and environmental activists visited Kawas village at Hazira in Surat district on Monday,a day after villagers reported thousands of dead fish floating in a large pond that belongs to a multinational company.

The pond,according to villagers,is spread on approximately 60 hectares of land.

Village sarpanch Hasubhai Patel and Hazira Kantha Vistar president Dhansukh Patel said that when they learnt of the dead fish,they rushed to the spot but were prevented by the security guards from going near the pond after which they informed GPCB officials.

GPCB officials visited the site today and took samples of water from the pond for lab tests. They also clicked pictures of the pond.

About a year ago,a few buffaloes had died after drinking water from the same pond,sources said. A probe by GPCB found the presence highly toxic material in the pond,they said.

GPCB regional director Anil Patel failed to respond despite repeated attempts.
