Ponty family got 7 arms licences on same day in Rampur

On June 26, 1991, the Rampur district administration issued seven arms licences to Gurdeep Singh (Ponty) Chadha and his family members, including his brothers Hardeep and Rajinder, and cousin Gurjeet Singh.

In fact, Ponty Chadha was issued two arms licences — for a rifle and a double-barrel breach loading (DBBL) gun — despite the fact that he suffered disabilities in both hands.

The licences were issued to them at an address in Nagalia Khurd village, under Bilaspur police circle. Inspector Balbeer Singh of Bilaspur police station said a paper mill was located at the address. "The mill has been closed for some time now," he said.

Rampur District Magistrate Anil Dhingra said, "In all, seven licences were issued on June 26, 1991, to Ponty and his family members at the same address."

Hardeep got licences for a revolver and a rifle, Rajinder was issued licence for a DBBL gun, while Gurjeet got the licence of a rifle. Another Harpal Singh was issued the licence of a DBBL gun. Officials said that all seven were state-level licences.

Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, former chairman of Uttarakhand Minorities Commission who has been arrested by Delhi Police for trespass and dacoity at the farmhouse were Ponty and Hardeep were killed over a property dispute on November 17, also has a Rampur connection.

In 2000, Namdhari and eight others were booked for a double murder that took place at Andi Khera village under Milakkhanam police circle in Rampur. Four persons were injured in the incident.

On the intervening night of June 11 and 12, some persons scaled the boundary wall of the house of one Gurubachan Singh and attacked him and his family with sticks and iron rods. Gurbachan and son Mohan Singh were killed, while Mohan Singh's wife Manjeet Kaur, her two sons Mehar Singh and Tej Pal Singh, and daughter Jasbeer Singh were injured. Rampur police investigated and filed the chargesheet in September 2000.
