Met says rainfall activity revival expected after July 10
With the city receiving scanty rainfall, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has called a meeting on Saturday to assess the situation and level of water in reservoirs .
There has been no improvement in rainfall and the administration is taking all possible measures to maintain the dam level so that water supply for the city lasts till August 15, a civic body official said.
PMC Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said final call will be taken at the review meeting chaired by deputy chief minister. As of now, the city faces a 20 per cent water cut and with alternate day water supply it would go down further.
Meanwhile, the Met department has said Pune would see only "subdued rainfall activity" for the next two days. Deputy director general IMD, Pune, Medha Khole, said rainfall activity revival for the city is expected only after July 10.
"At present, convective clouds, which are near the equator, are likely to move northward. Thus, we can hope for more rain after two days. As of now, the city will see only subdued rainfall activity,'' said Khole.
The south-west monsoon has moved northward and has advanced over Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. The rainfall belt along the coast too has moved northward while the low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea too has moved inland which will cause only subdued rainfall activity in the region.
From June 1, the city has seen a deficit of 127 mm rainfall with the Met department recording only 41.2 mm rainfall till July 5. The all India monsoon too has been negative, recording a minus 30 mm rainfall. The first five days of July recorded only 6.5 mm rainfall. Met officials said July and August are the key rainfall months for the season.
