In a major breakthrough, the Porbandar police on Friday arrested Raju Odedara, the main accused in a five-year-old case of honour killing, which the police had started probing only 10 days ago following an anonymous letter. The accused is a resident of Kadiya plot in Porbandar city.
Raju, along with of his father and other accomplices, had allegedly abducted and murdered Pankaj Goswami, his brother-in-law,whom his sister married against their will. Goswami,a youth from the Devipujak caste, was allegedly killed two days after the couple got married.
Raju is the seventh person to be arrested in the case.
Earlier, his father,Rana, and five others were arrested, and who also confessed to the crime. The local crime branch is in the process to seek Raju’s custody from court where he will be produced by Friday evening, said a crime branch officer.
Pankaj,a resident of Junagadh, had reportedly fallen in love with the Rana Odedara’s daughter. When they got married against the wishes of the girl’s family,Pankaj’s father,Mulu, was abducted by the Odedaras to find the address of the couple, who had eloped to Ahmedabad.
An anonymous letter received by Kamla Baug police station carried graphic details of how Pankaj was brought to Porbandar and tortured to death. The body was then buried, while the girl was remarried to someone from her own caste.
The Goswamis told the police that they were threatened by Odedaras to keep mum over the incident.
