Hundreds of agitating farmers under the leadership of Porbandar MP Vithal Radadiya staged a gherao and chakkajam for an hour in Jetpur city on Friday to press for adequate power supply.
Hundred of farmers had gathered outside the mamalatdar’s office in Jetpur to submit a memorandum demanding adequate power supply. After submitting their memorandum, the farmers staged a chakkajam outside the mamalatdar’s office. The agitating farmers disrupted traffic for an hour.
Thereafter, the farmers, along with Radadiya, rushed to the local office of the Paschim Gujarat Vij Company limited (PGVCL), where Radadiya made an oral submission on behalf of the farmers. An assurance to settle the matter within four days, following a telephonic conversion between Radadiya and top officials, saw the farmers end their agitation.
Earlier on Thursday, a mob of agitating farmers had gheraoed a 66 KV sub-station on the outskirts of Bhalgam village of Visavadar taluka in Junagadh district and man-handled an electricity company official.
Junagadh-based Executive Engineer C G Chapla had rushed to the site after hearing of the gherao, and upon his arrival, the agitating farmers manhandled him and other PGVCL officials.
Following the incident, Visavadar town police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, Chapala lodged a complaint against three farmers, Kanti Vekariya, Manu Dadbhai and Amru Champaraj, who had led the mob. The police have registered a complaint under Sections 332, 504, 506 (2) and 114 of the IPC. “Investigation is under progress, but no one has been arrested yet,” said the police.
