"For us, it is undoubtedly a very crucial election as we are facing the electorate not in alliance with Trinamool. It is not only a triangular election, but a multi-corner contest," said state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya.
The Left Front, meanwhile, feels that it has little to gain or lose in the latest round of contest. But with Mamata's efforts to prove that her party stands out in the triangular fight, the Left parties might become a surprise winner, taking advantage of the vote division between the Congress and the Trinamool.

However, Mamata's cadres have to fight the growing disillusionment of the people with their 18-month rule. Riding on the wave of poribartan, Trinamool came to power, but the change, many say, has failed to translate. With the panchayat polls due in May, the latest results may signal to what is in store for the political future of Bengal.
