Post-Delhi gangrape, UT Police steps up vigil

Days after the Delhi gangrape led to massive protests across the country, the UT police has also woken up to the need for increasing security cover for women and patrolling across the city, especially during night.

To ensure security during the night hours, the UT police has launched a special drive across the city identifying certain roads which are prone to mishaps and untoward incidents, and have increased night patrolling across these points in the city.

Further, to ensure that discotheques which are usually prone to incidents of drunken brawls and eve-teasing cases at night, PCRs have been asked to ensure that the discotheques are closed as per their scheduled timings, at 1 am from Monday to Friday and 2 am sharp on Saturday and Sunday.

"The idea is to increase visibility of the police personnel across the city. Even earlier, these PCR vehicles were stationed at their designated places, but in the light of some recent incidents, their visibility is being increased, so anybody in distress can take help from the police. In addition to this, we have also started special nakas on various roads from 10 pm to 4 am," DSP Roshan Lal told Chandigarh Newsline.

Besides, to increase visibility of PCRs in the city, all the 59 PCR vehicles have been asked to keep their parking lights, blinkers switched on during the night hours and during the foggy weather conditions.

The police have also requested the residents to remember the landline BSNL numbers besides the 100 number in case the number is not approachable.

Any senior citizen, working women/girls can take the help of PCR from 11 pm to 5 am. For the purpose, all the PCR vehicles will be available for drop in case anyone needs it during late night hours.

Recently, the SSP of the UT police had called an emergency meeting at night at one of the busy roundabouts after a suspicious SMS was generated from one of the pubs in the city. The entire UT police swung into action apprehending an emergency situation.
