From Sholay to Don and then 3 Idiots,37 minimalist movie posters designed by cinemaniacs across the country are on display in the city
A thought,a sight,a Tweet,a blog entry . The result: movie posters start trending. Not original film posters cluttered with details, but simple, minimalist ones that capture the whole concept of a film in one picture, word or letter. Three months back,Abhinav Bhatt,a software engineer based in Bengaluru, came across the minimalmovieposters.tumblr.com blog that teemed with posters of international films digitally created by cine-enthusiasts. “Why not start a similar blog for Indian films since we have so many releases across several languages every year?” thought Bhatt. Fully inspired, this movie buff designed three posters and uploaded them. The idea went viral and today minimalmoviepostersindia.tumblr.com has a number of contributors. Thirty-seven of the posters uploaded here will be displayed at Pune’s Grubshup,Law College Road, from today till March 10.
A majority of Bhatt’s creative designs as well as those by Pune-based architect Meghana Kulkarni,Shaunak Mukherjee from Ahmedabad,Heer Pathak from Ranchi,A R Hemant from Bengaluru,Ojasvi Mohanty from Bengaluru and Srijan Dubey from Mumbai have been selected for the exhibition. Kulkarni has coordinated the exhibition in Pune. “I have contributed four posters. The blog is open to anyone and everyone. It’s a fan art site,” she says.
Describing it as pop art,Kulkarni says,”Each person has his/her own way of interpreting a film. That’s why it’s so interesting to see the end result.” For example, for Mr India ,Bhatt used a blank grey page with goggles in the centre. “The goggles have red glasses and in one of them you can see a tiny image of Anil Kapoor and Sridevi,” Bhatt says. This was his first poster. Don by A R Hemant depicts one man being followed by 11 policemen, based on the famous dialogue from the film – ” Don ke peeche gyarah mulko ki police… ” “For Junglee ,I’ve just used the letter Y for Yahoo,” Bhatt says, whilst giving us a peek into his creativity.
These digital artists use software programmes like Adobe Photshop and Illustrator to make the posters. “It’s simple and thus we encourage everyone to contribute. This site is not owned by any one person. It’s meant for fans,” Bhatt says.
(The posters will be displayed till March 10 at Grupshup, from 10 am to 11 pm).
