Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje is expected to meet BJP party chief Rajnath Singh and L K Advani in New Delhi on Saturday in a bid to contain the political crisis arising out of the demand for her resignation as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly. Following senior leader Jaswant Singh’s expulsion from the party, Raje’s supporters are anxiously watching if she will give in to the high command’s demand.
A close ally of Raje said L K Advani called her up from Shimla on Thursday and asked her to meet the party leadership in Delhi. Raje has so far resisted going to Delhi to meet the party chiefs after he asked her to step down last week. However, in a show of strength, close to 50 MLAs from the state had met Singh over the issue, while Advani chose not to meet them.
Bansur MLA and Raje aide Rohitash Kumar Sharma said she would leave for New Delhi on Friday noon. “Vasundharaji is meeting the party high command on Saturday. However, the exact reasons for the visit are not known to us,” Sharma said.
However, following Jaswant Singh’s expulsion and the suspension of two of Raje’s close allies for indiscipline, those close to her accept that she has softened her stance. A close ally even hinted that Raje might have to finally resign despite enjoying enormous support in Rajasthan. “Raje and her supporters have always maintained that we will follow party orders, but Rajnath Singh set no deadline for her resignation. It depends on what the party orders in the end,” he said.
