“This is far lesser than the growth rate of the previous decade,1991 to 2001,when population of Delhi recorded a growth of 47 per cent. It appears that Delhi’s population growth is showing a tendency towards stabilisation,” the Census Report said.

In fact,of Delhi’s nine districts,two have recorded a significant decline in population growth — the New Delhi district recorded a decrease of 25.35 per cent and the Central district shrunk by 10.48 per cent. Southwest district,meanwhile,emerged as the fastest growing,with a growth of 30.62 per cent.

According to the Directorate of Census Operations,the fall in the decadal growth rate can be attributed to the removal of slum clusters from various parts of the Capital since 2001,and simultaneous largescale commercialisation,particularly in Central Delhi areas like Karol Bagh,Chandni Chowk,Paharganj,Sadar Bazaar.

The report stated t with laws permitting conversion of residential buildings into commercial spaces,people in Central Delhi have chosen to commercialise their properties and live in other districts.

The growth of population the Southwest district is attributed to people flocking to the relatively new sub-city of Dwarka. “A lot of new settlement has also taken place in and around Najafgarh,Kapashera and Bijwasan,by migrants who mainly work in Gurgaon,” the report stated.

The Northwest and Northeast districts have grown by 27.63 per cent and 26.73 per cent,respectively.

The East district,which is almost the same size as the Northeast,has grown only by 16.68 per cent — the figure would have been higher had it not been for the removal of the Yamuna Pushta and other slum clusters from the district.

“The unauthorised colonies of the West district have shown growth. The higher income housing has not expanded much,leading to overall medium population growth,” the report said. The overall density of population in Delhi has risen from 9,340 persons per sq km in 2001 to 11,297 persons in 2011.

The dip in the child (0-6 years) population is also considered a major factor in the trend towards stabilisation of population.
