International Court of Justice judge Christopher Greenwood on Wednesday said that many powerful nations continued to disregard the ICJ, with some of them even refusing to bind themselves to its decisions.

Delivering the inaugural Milon Banerjee Memorial Lecture on 'Rule of Law in International Society', the former Cambridge academic pointed to the fact that majority of the countries which are members of the ICJ have agreed to be bound by the orders of the world court, whose main function is to settle legal disputes between nations and to provide advisory opinions on legal questions submitted to it by international organisations such as the UN General Assembly. The renowned barrister also said that there was no code of international law.

For his part, Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir recalled his long association with late Milon Banerjee, saying many in the legal fraternity had benefitted from his knowledge.
