Days after the Delhi government blamed pollution from Punjab for the smog in the national capital, and NASA satellite images confirmed large scale burning of paddy stubble in Punjab fields, the Punjab Pollution Control Board has finally woken up.

PPCB chairman Ravinder Singh on Thursday visited the PAU and held a detailed discussion on the issue of paddy straw burning, its impact on eco-system and effective measures to control it. Singh was accompanied by Dr Baburam, member secretary, PPCB and other board members.

PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon said that the university was making lot of efforts to check the practice of stubble burning. The PAU has come up with the technology of producing biogas from paddy straw, he said, adding that special thrust is being laid on the development of dwarf and short duration varieties of paddy.
