  • Giving relief to Delhi government, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday proposed to substantially enhance the allocations for the next year’s Commonwealth Games to Rs 3,472 crore.

Presenting the Union budget in the Lok Sabha, Mukherjee proposed to increase the allocation from Rs 2,112 crore in the interim budget to Rs 3,472 crore.

“The Commonwealth Games present the country with an opportunity to showcase our potential as an emerging Asian power,” Mukherjee said.

Facing fund crunch for several projects related to the prestigious event, the Delhi government had requested the Centre to allocate more money.

The Delhi government in its budget had earmarked Rs 2,105 crore for the financial year 2009-10 for projects related to the Games.
