Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur has promised to take up within the government the case of Subedar Surjit Singh, the BSF jawan captured by Pakistan during the 1971 War.

The minister’s assurance to reporters in Patiala yesterday has boosted the hopes of the family of the soldier who, according to Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney,is in a prison in that country.

“Burney told us that he had found my father in a jail in Quetta and that he would ensure that he is back home within two months. However,we have not heard from Burney after the death of Osama bin laden. We wanted to meet Preneet Kaur, but she was out of the country. I will seek an appointment with her now,” said Amrik Singh,Surjit Singh’s son.

Surjit Singh was posted in Chamba during the 1971 War. He was captured by the Pakistani Army, and declared dead by the Indian Army. His family has been receiving his pension. “In the past, many spies and soldiers captured by Pakistan have come back home. I will meet them and inquire about my father. One soldier who came back almost 10 years ago, told me that he had spent some time with my father in jail,” said Amrik, who was only a year-and-a-half when Surjit went missing.
