  • Aditya Birla Hospital held a mass casualty management drill to keep its casualty team well-prepared

Being located close to the highway, the Aditya Birla Hospital receives road accidents victims quite often. The hospital had organised a mass casualty management drill to highlight the systematic approach towards a mass casualty and also to keep the casualty team prepared for such situations. A situation was created where 20 dummy patients, including men, women and children, were rushed to the hospital after a road accident. The drill was executed very comprehensively with an all-risk major incident plan to deal with disasters.

“We often see major trauma, road accidents, fatal industrial injuries victims being rushed to the hospital. To meet these challenges we have initiated these casualty management drills which are done on a regular basis”, said Dr Santosh K Kakade.

The drill is to test the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and follows guidelines set by the quality standards. It illustrated how Code yellow (A message announced over a hospital's public address system alerting the staff about, and the need to prepare for, a pending emergency or external disaster) is activated. The team involved four casualty medical officers to handle the casualty situation supported by doctors from general surgery, orthopaedics, anaesthesia team, nurses and paramedical staff. In this situation the patients were given complete support of blood bank, diagnostics, equipment, polytrauma unit, ventilators, monitors, stretches for safe transport, anaesthesia for pain management. The hospital had also positioned their fully equipped ambulances at Dehu road, Chakan and Chandni Chowk to ensure safe transport of the ill or the injured to the hospital.
