President Pranab Mukherjee has rejected the mercy petitions of four convicts facing death sentence and who are lodged in UP jails,it was learnt. They are Gurmeet Singh,Jafar Ali,Ramji Chauhan and his brother-in-law Suresh.
Secretary (Home) R N Upadhyay confirmed that the state government had been communicated about the rejection of their mercy petitions. Additional DG Rajesh Pratap Singh,IG prison administration and reform,however,said that he is yet to receive the information.
Gurmeet Singh of Pilibhit district,who is lodged in Bareilly jail,was sentenced to death on July 20,1992. He,along with his friend Lakha Singh,was held guilty of killing 13 members of Gurmeets family,including father Nazir Singh,his two brothers and their wives,and eight children on August 17,1986.
While Lakha Singh was shot dead after a few years of the massacre when out on bail,the Supreme Court dismissed Gurmeets appeal on September 28,2005,saying that he deserved no leniency as he had not shown even a grain of mercy while committing the crime.
The police probe had found that the motive behind the massacre was alleged illicit relations of Gurmeets wife.
Ramji Chauhan and Suresh of Varanasi are lodged in the Naini jail. Suresh had killed his brother Ramesh,his wife and five children at Nayapurwa locality in City Kotwali area of Varanasi on October 6,1996. Suresh had executed the killings with the help of his wifes brother Ramji.
Both were sentenced to death on December 19,1997,and the Supreme Court upheld the sentence in 2005.
Jafar Ali of Etawah district had killed his wife and five children over a family dispute on July 17,2002 for which he was sentenced to death in 2004. His appeal filed against the sentence in the Supreme Court was dismissed in 2006.
