Sri Lanka's president signed a decree Monday calling for early elections, hoping to take advantage of his popularity after ending the country's 25-year civil war to win a new six-year term.

However, President Mahinda Rajapaksa could face a strong challenge from another war hero, former army chief Gen. Sarath Fonseka.

Fonseka, who accused the government of sidelining him after the war, is expected to lead a coalition of opposition parties in the election.

Rajapaksa met with leaders of his United Peoples Freedom Alliance Monday and told his political allies that he would hold the elections two years before the end of his term, according to a statement posted on the president's Web site.

The election commissioner will announce the dates of the poll in the coming days. Media reports say the election will likely be held the third week of January.

The president can call an election after serving four years in office. Through a quirk of the constitution, Rajapaksa would be able to serve the final two years of his term regardless of the outcome of the vote.

In a series of recent local elections, Rajapaksa's coalition has won control of all eight provincial assemblies.

Rajapaksa and Fonseka led the country's war against the Tamil Tiger rebels - an insurgent group fighting for a homeland for the Tamil minority. The government won the war in May, making the men heroes among the country's Sinhalese majority.

Analysts say Rajapaksa needs to quickly turn his support into an election victory before voters start focusing on other, less favourable, issues, such as the economy.

EngineerBy: Victor W | 11-Jan-2010 Reply | Forward I am a Sri Lankan Sinhalese living in Australia.I know that the majority of sinhalese people put emotions on top of intelligence. Rajapaksa is a intelligent politician and he knows this fact. I believe that is the reason for him to call for this election early. However, Rajapaksa has liberted the country and diserves the victory in this election. If he loose this election, it will be matter of sri lankan people exposing them self to the international community. I would like to remind all Sri Lankans the famous story of dog and the donkey. Don't support the donkey. Let the dog do the job and he will wake up at the right time. Also, Sri Lanka will never be a first world country under democracy but under a intelligent dictator.

DEFUSE OF PRESIDENTIAL POWERS?By: MADAN MENON THOTTASSERI | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Still the question looms around political circles%u2026. How could the Ruling Alliance win general elections when there is a 50-50 chance for both sides? How can Ranil too envisage a blooming victory for General Fonseka to become President and then to obligate for Ranil to become the Prime Minister?.Even if all goes well for the presidential poll and a general poll, will general Fonseka take initiative to empower Ranil as Prime Minister by defusing his supreme Presidential powers?
PENDING POLITICAL SOLUTION TO ETHNICITYBy: MADAN MENON THOTTASSERI | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sri Lankan regime, what ever be the out come of presidential and Parliamentary polls, must gather support from all sections of society to arrive at a consensus on a challenging and lasting political solution for the peaceful muti-lingual and multi-religious society in the island nation. It is very important that government has to offer an economic package to refugees returning to native places, for commencement of farming; trade, business and industrial activities for generation of employment opportunities in the regions where they are being resettled. Still the question looms around political circles%u2026. How could the Ruling Alliance win general elections when there is a 50-50 chance for both sides?
King maker RANILBy: MADAN MENON THOTTASSERI | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Ranil Wickremesinghe, Leader of United National Party (UNP), the main Party leading the Opposition Alliance (UNF) has seen the next Presidential candidate on Gen.Fonseka, to defeat Mahinda Rajapaksa. There UNP had roped in TNA, though most of the Tamil speaking people will be not in favour of Gen.Fonseka for his ruthless tactics especially when the military crushed LTTE in the last phase of the war. They will a have an adverse opinion on Rajapaksa in the other camp too, for having displaced them in their own country. They may prefer for either staying away from polls or to field their own candidates to split votes. Ranil had meticulously persuaded Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Marxist-Sinhalese nationalist movement which has been condemning giving rights to minority Tamils, into the Alliance. It will be a herculean task to accommodate TNA and JVP together into an Alliance as both are prone to lock-horns for every issue it is going to encounter.
