In the backdrop of the attack on Indian priests in Pashupatinath in Nepal,India was on Tuesday reassured by that country’s political leadership that all necessary steps for the security and well-being of the priests have been taken.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao,who is on her maiden visit to Nepal and Bhutan, said,“I visited the sacred Pashupatinath Temple today. The political leaders conveyed their regret at the unfortunate incident involving the unprovoked attack on Indian priests in Pashupatinath.”

“The Government of Nepal also reassured me that they have taken all necessary measures to ensure the security and well-being of the Indian priests and continuation of regular prayers at the temple.” Two Indian priests were recently thrashed by Maoists, who want Indians — customary priests in the temple for several decades — to be replaced by locals. New Delhi had reacted strongly to the incident, terming it as an attack on Indo-Nepal civilizational ties.
