Villagers told to be vigilant about the functioning of the NREGS scheme

Quite reminiscent of what her father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, used to do, Priyanka Gandhi drove a green Toyota Qualis after she landed at Fursatganj airport in Sultanpur district on Friday morning.

After getting out of the airport, a smiling Priyanka walked to the waiting Qualis vehicle. She got into the driver’s seat, fastened the seat belt and set off on the journey, surprising her brother and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who was seated in the front seat of the vehicle.

Priyanka was at the wheel till Munshiganj, covering a distance of 35 km in about 40 minutes. From Munshiganj, Rahul took over and drove the vehicle.

On a number of occasions, the brother-sister duo alighted from the vehicle and met Congress functionaries and local groups on their way. They also received representations from aggrieved villagers and told them to be more vigilant about the execution of the NREGS scheme in their areas for better performance.

Later in the day, Rahul addressed a gathering at Argaon in Gauriganj, where he said that he aims to make the society prosperous and ensure that benefits of development reached the common man.

He also inspected a compost plant and apprised the people about various central government schemes for the uplift of villages. He told the villagers to work jointly for the development of the society and the country. “There is a need to do a lot of work in the villages,” he said. Informing the villagers about the recently-launched “Priyadarshini Yojna” under which rural youth and women will have more employment opportunities in villages, Rahul said, “The aim of the scheme is to stop migration from villages by creating job opportunities there only.”

    ... contd.
