Though Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s extensive roadshow failed to translate into any tangible gains for the party in Uttar Pradesh, his sister Priyanka Gandhi seems to have worked wonders in Rae Bareli and Amethi, her mother and brother’s parliamentary constituencies where she campaigned extensively.
Out of the 10 Assembly seats in the two Lok Sabha segments, Congress cornered seven seats this time, a gain of five from the 2002 elections.
In Rae Bareli, Congress’ Ashok Singh defeated BSP’s Uma Shankar Trivedi in Sareni by 23,329 votes, Shivbalak Pasi won over SP’s Asha Kishore by a margin of 13,109 votes in Salon and Raja Ram Tyagi defeated SP’s Ramlal Akela by 11,541 votes in Bachchrawan. All these seats were earlier held by the SP. Congress’ Ajay Pal Singh defeated SP’s Gajadhar Singh at Dalmau by 13,434 votes, dislodging the sitting BSP MLA.
In Amethi parliamentary segment, the Amethi and Jagdishpur Assembly seats were retained by Amita Singh and Ram Sewak of the Congress. However, the party’s Mohammad Muslim lost the Tiloi seat to SP’s sitting MLA Mayankeshwar Singh by only 157 votes.
The other two seats, Rae Bareli Sadar and Gauri Bazar, went to Independent Akhilesh Kumar Singh and BSP’s Tejbhan Singh respectively.
